Why do bands (artists) like music videos?

(1) Because they make them look good – a music video is a highly stylised representation of the band

(2) Brings a visual element to the song

(3) An excellent way to promote the band (Music TV channels; the box, Kerrang, Scuzz, MTV music online, YouTube, Vimeo)

(4) It’s fun!!

(5) They get to work with great directors; Spike Jones, Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry

(6) The story of the song is told in a visual (often film-like) way – lots of music videos have a narrative film element

(7) Music videos can show the personality of the band

(8) Allows the band to do stuff they cannot do on stage

(9) Music video can be incorporated into live set (e.g. Gorrillaz)

(10) Product placement/endorsement (Lady Gaga – Telephone)

Lady Gaga's "Telephone" (like some other music videos) is an example of being a short movie as well as a music video, to tell the narrative or story of the song.
